Virginia Intermont College was founded inwards 1884 as Southwest Virginia Institute inwards Glade Spring, Virginia.  In 1891, the establishment moved to Bristol,TN.  Initially founded for the pedagogy of women, Virginia Intermont became co-educational inwards 1972.
